Fort de Douaumont stands on the highest of the area’s hills. It is the strongest of the 39 fortresses and bastions built along a 45 km front to protect Verdun. Because the French high command disregarded warnings of an impending German offensive, Douaumont – whose 3 km network of cold, dripping galleries was built between 1885 and 1912 – had only a skeleton crew when the Battle of Verdun began. By the fourth day it had been captured easily ; four months later it was retaken by colonial troops from Morocco.
